Enemy of the Constitution of the United States?

We've all heard the oath regarding protecting the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic, but what does that mean?

In the past it was easier to tell who the enemy was. They were a nation whose government literally declared war on the United States. There was no doubt who they were and what they wanted. People even dressed in uniforms so that combatants were easily distinguished from non-combatants unless you were dealing with spies. In addition, such wars could be declared to be over when those in charge on one side or the other surrendered.

Today there are no declared wars. There often are not uniforms on one side or the other so that you are not even sure who the combatants are. There is no nation that declares war, and you can't even tell who is in charge or if anyone is really in charge. So, who is the enemy?

The Constitution of the United States defines what the United States is. Contrary to what some have said, it isn't just a piece of paper. It IS the United States. Without the Constitution there is no union of states. So it is ultimately relevant in determining friend from foe.

Those who reject what the Constitution says are its enemies. Those who try to misrepresent what the Consitution says are its enemies. Those who try to ignore what the Constitution says are its enemies. Those who try to regulate ways around what the Constitution says are its enemies. Those who try to breach the boundaries that the Constitution sets are its enemies.

Sadly these days the biggest enemies of the Constitution are elected members of our very own government. They are the ones who misrepresent it, try to regulate around it, ignore it and breach the boundaries set by it. Worst of all. We let it happen. We were asleep at the wheel. We didn't put these people to the test and hold them accountable. We failed to keep ourselves informed and failed to watch those that we elected to be sure they were doing what we elected them to do.

It doesn't have to stay this way. The same spirit that established the United States of America still exists in its people. We've awakened in the past and have done what needed to be done. It's not too late. It only becomes too late if you give up, and true Americans have never been the kind to give up.
